Keeping safe online is about much more that simply ensuring that you manage to avoid virus infections. This is something that Symantec are only too aware of and it is a fact reflected in the beta version of Norton Internet Security 5 for Mac which bring the security package bang up to date complete with OS X Lion support.
Aside from the fact that Norton Internet Security is now Lion compatible - and it is only compatible with Lion - there is not much else new to look forward to here. There is a new interface that brings the app more in line with the look of the Windows version of the software, but the only new feature is Safe Web which provides warnings about potentially unsafe web sites - and automatically blocks them so they cannot cause any damage.
While there is little new to talk about in the security suite, Norton Internet Security still has a lot to offer. There is an effective and easily configured firewall that can be used to control the flow of traffic to and from your computer - this is pleasingly simple to set up.
The threat of identity theft s one that everyone should be concerned about, but to help allay some fears. Norton Internet Security includes phishing protection that blocks known phishing sites while web searches have been made safer due to the SafeWeb component of the Norton toolbar. This provides a warning should a dangerous sites be listed in search results
It should be noted that this is beta software; as such it is not fully finished and issues may arise. You should take care when using any beta software, ensuring that you backup all of your important data.
The beta build will give you a 14 days license. Simply click "renew" to extend this license after 14 days. The beta will expire October 31st 2011.
